Description
Day 1
Siem Reap
Arrival in Siem Reap and meeting at the airport. Individual transfer to the Prince D’Angkor 4* hotel. Accommodation in a standard room and free time.
Siem Reap is the cultural capital of the Kingdom of Cambodia and the gateway to the Angkor temple complex. Just 20 years ago it was a quiet, small and unremarkable town, but over the past ten years it has changed a lot and turned into a real tourist “Mecca”, visited by about five million tourists a year. The city has its own airport, a good road network, as well as a large number of modern shops, restaurants, hotels and exotic markets.
Day 2
Siem Reap, Angkor
Breakfast at the hotel. At 07:00 the excursion to the majestic temples of the Angkor complex begins.
Today you will visit the largest and most important temples:
- Angkor Thom is an ancient city measuring 3 by 3 kilometers, which is completely surrounded by a high wall, and the gates to the city are protected by images of 54 Devatas and 54 Asuras holding a multi-headed dragon in their hands.
- Bayon Temple is a truly amazing temple with 54 towers, from which a four-faced deity looks out on all sides of the world, as if encompassing everything around with its gaze. French researchers called the various expressions of the 216 faces of Bayon “the smile of Angkor”.
- The Terraces of the Elephants and the Leper King are ancient elements of the city, restored in 1938 and having a large number of bas-reliefs on their walls.
- The Ta Keo Temple is quite simple, but incredibly attractive. According to experts, it carries a very strong positive energy, which Buddhist monks endowed it with in the 14th – 15th centuries during the consecration. Anyone who climbs to its top will be able to feel it.
- Ta Prohm is one of several temples that were deliberately not cleared of jungle. The walls of the temple are squeezed by the roots of huge trees. Angelina Jolie added fame to this temple by starring in the film “Lara Croft – Tomb Raider”.
- Angkor Wat is the calling card of Cambodia and the pearl of the Angkor Empire. This is the largest religious building in the world, which reflects all the achievements of architecture of that time. The temple is a national symbol of the Kingdom of Cambodia and is depicted on the flag of the state. The territory of the temple is huge, we will spend a lot of time there, walking through its galleries and examining ancient bas-reliefs from Hindu scriptures. We will also visit the Gallery of a Thousand Buddhas, get acquainted with Hindu ideas about Heaven and Hell, see an ancient statue of God Vishnu, receive a blessing from a Buddhist monk and take a lot of unforgettable photos.
Return to the city of Siem Reap and visit the Royal Park, which is located between the Raffles Grand Hotel and the Royal Residence. The park has centuries-old trees, on the crowns of which a colony of flying foxes lives.
Free time in the evening. You can walk around the city, visit the local market and the main tourist street Pub Street, where hundreds of tourists gather in the evenings.
Day 3
Siem Reap, Koh Ker, Preah Vihear, Srayem
Breakfast at the hotel. At 07:00 departure for an excursion.
Today will not be an easy day, but very interesting and eventful. You will cover a route of more than 300 km and see the distant temples of Angkor, which are visited by no more than 5% of tourists coming to the country. The trip here is very different in impressions and emotions from the first excursion day. If yesterday you were amazed by the size and scale of ancient buildings, today you will see ruins wrapped in lush greenery of the jungle, and also enjoy the natural landscapes and beauty of Cambodia.
Departure to the north of Cambodia (less than an hour on the way), to the complex of Hindu temples of Koh Ker from the heyday of the Khmer Empire in the mid-10th century.
At the Prasat Pram temple we will spend about half an hour admiring how the roots of a huge tree “flow” down the walls and envelop one of the towers, preventing it from falling apart. In the Prasat Linga temple we will see the largest Linga (phallic symbol) of all those preserved in Cambodia. In this place in ancient times rituals associated with fertility, health and childbirth were held.
Making our way through the ruins of the ancient temple, we will go to the main element of the Koh Ker complex – the large Prang pyramid. Having climbed to its top, beautiful views of the jungle will open up before you, and if the air is clear, you will see the Dangrek Mountains that separate Cambodia and neighboring Thailand. Having descended from the pyramid, you can have lunch with a local hunter, tasting wild boar or roe deer meat (payment on site).
After lunch, we drive to the border with Thailand to visit the ancient temple of Preah Vihear.
After driving about 140 km, we will find ourselves at the foot of the mountain, change our car for an SUV, which will take us to the top. Climbing up, we will see the beautiful landscapes of the Cambodian valley. This territory is disputed: the Thais and Khmers have been dividing these lands between themselves for a long time. The last armed conflict from 2009 to 2011 ended with a peace agreement between the two sides. At the top, we will leave the car and go explore the Preah Vihear temple on foot. It is built in several levels, which we will gradually overcome, admiring its architecture, bas-reliefs and landscapes around. Due to the specific climate at an altitude of more than 500 meters above sea level, fungi and bacteria live here, covering the stone and giving it a specific reddish hue. Once you reach the top level, you will see amazing views of the valley of Cambodia and Thailand. Breathtaking views from a height of 500 meters! Sometimes you can see a troop of monkeys here, who will be ready to accept bananas or other treats from you. After visiting the temple, we will go down the mountain.
Next, we will have a short drive to the town of Srayem along rice fields, peasant houses and military garrisons.
Check-in at the Sopheakmongkul 2*+ hotel in a standard room (there are no hotels of a higher category in this region).
Day 4
Sraem, Stung Treng province, Banlung
Early rise and breakfast at a local cafe.
07:30 Departure to Stung Treng province. Travel time is about 3 hours (225 km).
Stung Treng is a northern province of Cambodia, an important trade hub through which goods go from Laos and back. The main city of Stung Treng is located at the confluence of the mighty Mekong and the Sekong River. Fishing is developed in the province, as well as agriculture (fruit plantations, sugar cane plantations) and rubber production.
Arrival at the first point of Stung Treng province, where on the banks of the great Mekong River we will see rapids and waterfalls (from December to June, when the water level drops a little). The landscapes in these places change depending on the season, time of year and the amount of water in the river.
The Mekong is home to rare freshwater pink Irrawaddy dolphins. There are only about 500 left in the world. We will board a boat and sail to the middle of the Mekong in the hope of seeing them. Since there are very few dolphins left, seeing them is considered a great success. Returning to the shore, you will have the opportunity to fish and relax a little.
After rest, departure to Ratanakiri province. Travel time is more than 2 hours. On the way, we will pass a bridge over the Mekong, from which a beautiful view opens up.
In the evening, arrival in the city of Banlung – a small city in the north-east of the Kingdom of Cambodia and the administrative center of Ratanakiri province.
Check-in at the Yeakloam Hotel & Spa 4 * in a standard room.
Day 5
Banlung, Mondulkiri province, Sen Monorom
06:30 Early rise. Check-out. Breakfast at a local cafe.
07:30 Departure to Lake Eak Laom, which is located in the crater of a volcano that solidified more than 2000 years ago. The lake has a diameter of more than 750 meters and a depth of 50 meters. On the shore of the lake, we will enjoy the silence and morning birds singing, see the houses of minorities living in this province, and listen to fascinating stories about the wedding games of these tribes, who build wedding houses on piles about 5 meters high. If desired, you can swim in the lake.
Next, you will have a short drive and visit to the local market in the city of Banlung. Morning at the market is the busiest time. We will walk around the market in search of real exotics. Here you can find a lot of fruits, meat, fish, gold and precious stones, clothes from Thailand and Laos, tobacco and much more.
Departure from the city to the Kaachan waterfall. Along the way we will pass plantations of black pepper, Hevea tree and mango. Descent to the waterfall and a short rest in the shade of huge trees.
Transfer to the province of Mondulkiri. Travel time is about two hours. For a long time, civilization has bypassed these territories. The forests have preserved many plants and valuable wood, as well as rich fauna, and local tribes roam between the border of Vietnam and Cambodia. Coffee has been grown in Mondulkiri for a long time, and over the past 10 years, a large area has been cleared of forest, where international companies grow black pepper, avocado and Hevea tree to obtain latex.
Along the way, there will be a stop at an observation deck, from where you will have a gorgeous view of the virgin jungle and mountainous terrain of the province of Mondulkiri.
A short drive and we are at the Bousra waterfall – a large three-stage waterfall that has long attracted both people living in these areas and animals. Walking by the waterfall, you will have the opportunity to try the most delicious coffee that is grown in these mountainous areas, and also see representatives of the Phnong tribes.
After a short drive, we will make a stop and see coffee plantations, and, if we are lucky, beans on the branches, as well as Asian fruits. Being near the city of Sen Monorom, already at sunset, we will visit an observation deck with a view of the city.
A short drive to the city of Sen Monorom and check-in at the KNN Resort Mondulkiri 4 * hotel in a standard room.
Day 6
Sen Monorom, Phnom Penh
After breakfast at the hotel, departure to the Mondulkiri Project Nature Reserve, where elephants live in a large, closed area. Previously, these elephants lived in poor conditions, they were used to perform heavy work, and now it is forbidden to even sit on them.
Upon arrival at the reserve, you will receive instructions and your first acquaintance with the elephants. You will be able to feed them and take pictures with these giants.
In the afternoon, we will travel 350 kilometers to the capital of Cambodia – Phnom Penh.
Late in the evening, check in at the Palace Gate 5 * hotel in a standard room.
Day 7
Phnom Penh
Breakfast at the hotel. At 08:00 departure for a sightseeing tour of Phnom Penh – the political and economic center of Cambodia. The city is actively developing, and now next to the French colonial buildings you can see giant skyscrapers.
Visit to the historical center of the city – Wat Phnom Pagoda. According to legend, on this hill, Grandmother Doung Penh placed a statue of Buddha, which she found in a log floating on the Mekong River. Since then, this place has been revered by the local population.
The next stop is at the Royal Palace (only part of the palace is open to tourists). You will see the throne room, the Emerald Buddha, the house of Napoleon III and the stupa of Kunthia Bopha – the daughter of King Norodom Singhanuk, who died of dengue fever in childhood.
Then we will go to the Independence Monument – a large structure in the city center, designed by the architect Vann Molyvan. It combines elements of Khmer and French architecture and is installed in honor of Cambodia’s independence from France.
You will also see the Mekong River embankment.
Return to the hotel.
12:00 Check out from the hotel and transfer to the airport. Departure to the next destination on the travel route.
If you wish, you can continue your holiday on the coast of Sihanoukville (cost calculated upon request).
